Inside the lighthouse

Here10493680053_4774195d14_z are two sounds from a visit to Flat Holm Island with Listing Ships in October 2013. We were fortunate enough to be able to enter the lighthouse, since it was being serviced (it’s usually out of bounds and only accessible by visiting Trinity House staff) and spend time recording in there.

The field recording is the ambient sound of the mechanics within the lighthouse, reverberating down the central column (pictured here).

The processed version is five or six layers of lighthouse sounds, with some accompanying Korg MS-20 layers run through tape echo and a low-pass filter.
