Nightmare on the Megadance
Continuing our series on the sounds of the funfair, next up is the sound of the Megadance, one of the rides that generates by proportion the greatest volume of teenage screaming, as a row of seated people are whizzed around in circles as if bolted to the inside of a washing machine, while being assaulted by industrial volumes of low-quality dance music.
And if you thought the original recording was nightmarish enough, Oxford sound artist Lee Riley has turned it into something that’s genuinely quite disturbing to listen to on headphones, a swirling miasma of cut-up vocals and manipulated house music. It sums up what it might be like to be at a funfair if you were having a bad trip.
