The west call to prayer, Saudi Arabia

The call to prayer is one of the most beautiful “man-made” sounds in the world, and we can never tire of hearing and recording it.

There are some great examples of Cities and Memory already, including calls to prayer from Meknes in Morocco, Bangladesh, Jerusalem, Tirana and New Delhi.

Today’s sound comes from the Diplomatic Quarter in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where the call to prayer for maghrib resounds at around 6pm, in a courtyard with a tree full to bursting with songbirds.

In the reimagined version, lines of synths begin with a “call and response” dialogue with the call to prayer lines, until they come together in unison and create a unified wall of inclusive sound.
