Essaouira, Morocco at sunset. Listening to the Atlantic waves crashing in as we sit close to the fortress in the port, the Sqala du Port in this great trade city sitting at the crossroads of different civilisations.
Here’s a short video clip of this recording being made to give you something of the atmosphere:
The Sqala is made famous (apparently) by having a prominent role in the TV show Game of Thrones, hence the title of this piece.
We focus on opening with a bang, drowning the waves in squalls of feedback until they cannot be heard, and slowly peeling back the synthetic layers to reveal the beauty of the pure wave sounds by the end of the piece.
This piece is all about the reveal, drawing back from the noise and intensity of city life to expose the simple calming of waves drawing into a beach at the end of a long day.
