The gulls in St Ives bay were going crazy (photo courtesy of Giulia). Alongside the usual raucous shouts you’d expect, they were making noises more like something from a mewling cat or a crying baby, scarcely moving as I wandered right up to them to record everything. For the remix, given such an extraordinary chorus from the birds, I decided to use nothing at all apart from tiny snippets of the gulls’ cries, with a huge amount of processing and layering. Since they had a natural kind of music about them, the resulting sounds I made were beautifully organic and took on a life of their own, resulting in this little drone piece, which I think sounds much nicer than these screaming, chip-hungry monsters.
