A cry for democracy in Tahrir Square, Cairo
Today’s sound, recorded by Kim Laugs, demonstrates the aural chaos of a protest in Tahrir Square in Cairo, Egypt – the site of a large number of important and substantial protests over recent years in particular.
Multiple voices jump out from all sides, some amplified by megaphones, some chanting songs, others exhorting the crowd to action.
For our reimagined sound, pulsing waves of brass instruments create a sense of foreboding, over a bed of filtered and manipulated sections of the field recording.
Snippets from the protest jump in and out, mirrored by mournful excerpts of singing.
